I don’t know if I’ll ever be lucky enough to harvest in the snow again. I hope so. I know we all still talk about it. I remember thinking, as we whitened that evening in Vermont, that traditionally, a farmer would call this perfect timing: winter arriving just as the harvest is in. Time for mending harness.

Not for me, and not for Colin and Erin. Per Margaret’s Law, we had to process our respective products. I was already trying to remember how many hundreds of empty Hemp in Hemp bottles I had stored under Cary’s daughter’s desk six months earlier. How many caps did I have to order? What would be the final hit to my bank account for product labels?

A few hours later, while the bulk of the harvest was drying at the popcorn farm, we brought some seed and flower home to Cary’s for the long-planned waffle feast. Oh man, fresh hemp waffles soaked in home-tapped maple syrup and topped with raspberries. It sounds like an epicurean binge, but actually it was a business lunch: I suspected I might need the energy boost for the intense processing that was to come.

I was kind of right. What with homeschooling and looming book deadlines, it took four months before I got to processing in early 2019. But superfood waffles with friends at least helped me start the journey.
